Sri Ammãlu Ammãl with Sri Swamiji
|
Ammãlu ammãl, now in Her mid-nineties, is a great devotee of the Lord. Our
Sri Swamiji, had given Her the title ‘Abhinaya Mira’ during Her visit to Premika Bhavanam in 1997. A child widow, She has offered her whole life to Bhagavãn since her childhood. Due to the grace of Lord Nrisimha She had given up taking food since her 18th year and is ever since taking only a glass of milk and two bananas. On ‘Ekãdasi’ She does not take even this!
She has been performing bhajan everyday for the past forty years.
She has spent 7 years within the precincts of Panduranga temple in Pandaripura singing His praises. The world, as is its nature, did not recognize Her until Maha Periyava spoke of her greatness and glory. Sri Ammãlu Ammãl has written tens of thousands of kirtans on Bhagavãn in simple Kannada language.
Sri Ammãlu Ammãl was in Town. Sri Swamiji visited Her and invited Her to Premika Bhavanam.
Our Satsang had made all the arrangements to receive her at Premika Bhavanam, Chennai,
but as the Great Devotee of the Lord expressed her desire to have darshan of ‘Kalyana’
Srinivas Perumal in our Mathurapuri Ashram, Sri Swamiji brought her to our Mathurapuri Ashram.
All the devotees rushed to Mathurapuri ashram to have darshan and blessings of this great devotee
of the Lord. Sri Ammãlu Ammãl was seated in the Bhãgavatam hall. Two of her personal
attendants Ms. Srimati and Ms. Radhika had accompanied Her. No sooner had She sat than a kirtan
(in Kannada) on our ‘Kalyana’ Srinivasa Perumal began to pour forth from Her lips!
Sri Ammãlu Ammãl with Sri Swamiji and the satsang devotees

Mana vachana kãya shuddhi
Charanu charanu geive! (Sri Kalyana)
Shankha chakra shobhisirivi!
Shankheyilladhe varava surivi!
Panka needhi samsãra ninna
Kinkarige mullakãlavarigenivi! (Sri Kalyana)
Nãkku Veda dhwaniyu neene!
Nãkku purushãrtha dhãtanu neene!
Nãkku yugakke oppida neene!
Nãkku kãla moortiyu neene! (Sri Kalyana)
Bhaktarishta savisuvi!
Bhaktara bhãra vagisuvi!
Bhaktara bennige thiruguvi!
Bhakta vasammãlu priya neene! (Sri Kalyana)
Meaning as rendered by Sri Ammãlu Ammãl -
‘Kalyã na Srinivã sa, Kã runya Venkatesa’ - ‘Kã runya!’ Hey! Kalyã na Srinivã sa! You cut, cut, cut away the sins!
‘Mana, vachana, kã ya shuddhi’ - cleansing my mind, word and body
‘charanu! Charanu! geive’ - I prostrate unto You! One prostration to You. One for Lakshmi. I prostrate both of You together, Oh! Lord!
‘Shankha Chakra shobhisirivi’ - You appear with Conch and Wheel!
‘shankhayilladhe varava surivi’ - You rain down boons on Your devotees!
‘pankha needhi samsã ra ninna’ - ‘pankha’ means water. ‘needhi’ means ocean.
‘kinkarige mullakã lvarigenuvi’ - You say that for Your devotees the life that is like the ocean is only up till their knees! You are keeping Your hands like this (the left palm is placed at the knee) to show that this ocean of life is up to the knees for Your ‘Kingarã s’ - Bhaktã s (devotees)! It is like a canal. It is not a problem for them. For them the life is not an ocean. They can jump across as one does over a canal. That is why You are keeping the hand like this, Oh! Lord!
‘nã kku Veda dwaniyu neene’ - Is it necessary that You should appear only as this form holding the Shankha and Chakra? AreYou not in theVedas? Are You not the four Veda ‘dwani’ (sound)? You are verily that ‘dwanippa’ (sound, Oh! Lord!)! You are verily in these ‘dwani’ (sound). There is no need for a form!
‘nã kku purushã rtha dhã tanu neene’ - Oh! Prabho! You are verily the One who gives the four ‘purushã rthã s’ (the four ends of human existence) - dharma, artha, kã ma and moksha (Righteousness, worldly prosperity, desire/lust, liberation). You are verily the One who can give the four ‘purushã rthã s’. You are holding Your hand in this way (in a manner of bestowing it all).
‘nã kku yugakku oppida neene’ - Oh! Prabho! You are verily the One who can come through all the four Yugas - in ‘kruta yuga’ You were Nrisimha; in ‘treta yuga’ You were Raghunandana; in ‘dwã para yuga’ You were Vã sudeva and in ‘Kali yuga’ You are Venkatanã yaka! You stand as ‘Kalyana’ Srinivasa in Tirupati, Oh! Lord!
‘nã kku kã la murtiyu neene’ - ‘Oh! Lord! One who is four ‘kã la’ Murti! At dawn (‘udaya kã la’) You are verily Sriman Narayana! From 10 to 12 noon You are Rama.
Sri Ramachandra Prabho! Why? When the Sun is so hot You stand as Rama in order to turn the Sun as cool as the Moon! So, You stand as Rama between 10 a.m. to 12 noon!
At dusk (‘pradosha kã la’) You stand as Lakshmi Nrisimha, Oh! Lord! At night (‘sayana kã la’) You stand as ‘Dorai’ (Lord) Venunã tha!
Gopinã tha! Gopijã ra! Gopi ka vallabha! Wearing such Names, You wander about at nights! You are verily the four ‘kã la’ murti.
‘Bhaktarishta sahisuvi neene’ - Oh! Prabho! Once a devotee desires something You vow to fulfill it! You definitely fulfill that, which the Bhakta desires.
‘Bhaktara bhã ra vahisuvi neene’ - If the Bhakta throws his burden on You, You stand bearing it on Your head!
‘Bhaktara bennige thiruguvi neene’ - You are always at the Bhakta’s back! You keep following them right behind their back! We do not know that at all! Due to ignorance we do not know! But, You certainly carry on Your ‘sankalpa’ (Will) to full.
‘BhaktivasAmmãlu priya neene’ - You become bound by Bhakti. You feel bound by Bhakti! - ‘I must listen to whatever they say! I must do whatever they want!’ thus You stand bound, Oh! Such ‘Ammãlu priya’ (Beloved of Ammãlu) are You!
Oh! Lord! There is no need for an idol/form (‘prathimai’). I have found You in the sound (‘dwani’) of the Vedas, Oh! Prabho! The Praises that the fours Vedas shower, You are verily that sound (‘dwani’)! Oh! Lord! Nothing else strikes me, Oh! Lord! Nothing, absolutely nothing strikes me! Oh! Lord!”
Sri Swamiji then requested Sri Ammãlu Ammãl to bless the Veda Patasala students and all others present with sugar candy. She blessed all present with sugar candy.
At the behest of Sri Swamiji, Ms. Sangeetha Janakiraman sang Ammãlu Ammãl’s kirtans (four kirtans that had came out of Her during the Samprokshanam of the temples in Her Guru Sri Ramachandra teertha’s samadhi, Amarendrapuram, Kumbakonam, last month) and a kirtan on our Srinivasa Perumal at Premika Bhavanam that was sung by Her during Her visit to the place in 1997.
Sri Swamiji then took Her to ‘Kalyana’ Srinivasa Perumal temple. Sri Swamiji and Sri Ammãlu Ammãl sat inside the ‘Garba graha’ (sanctum sanctorum) while Her two attendants and the Veda Patasala boys sat in the corridor just outside the ‘garba graha’.
Sri Ammãlu Ammãl with Sri Swamiji at the Sri 'Kalyana' Srinivasa Perumal Temple
Ammãlu Ammãl, accompanied by Ms. Srimati and Ms. Radhika at first sang one of her earlier kirtans on Srinivasa Perumal. At Sri Swamiji’s request they then sang few other Ammãlu Ammãl’s kirtans. As they were singing on Govinda, a new kirtan on Krishna began to pour forth from Sri Ammãlu Ammãl -----

‘kolãttam’ with the Gopîs. You have indeed

Sitting on the lap of Gopi, Oh! The pet of
Ammãlu - Krishna! How many Plays
have You performed! [when any Gopi came in
to complain about Your mischief to Your

‘Ma! I did not do! I did not do!’
You have uttered innumerable lies sitting on her lap,
sitting on her chest and sitting all over her body!
There is no count toYour bluffs! You are a big
bluffer!
Oh! Prabhu! You who have uttered countless
lies! Come and stand in front of me! [Bandenna

Sri Swamiji requested Sri Ammãlu Ammãl to perform ‘Kolãhãla’ archana. Accompanied by Ms. Radhika, the great devotee of the Lord performed ‘archana’ to Perumal as She sang, ‘Kolãhãlanige namo! namo!’
This was followed by the great Bhaktai’s kirtans on Govinda, Durga, Perumal, etc. Sri Ammãlu Ammãl then sang the kirtan that fell out of Her lips in the ashram precincts on our ashram ‘Kalyana’ Srinivasa Perumal.
Sri Swamiji offered a brick coloured, maroon bordered zareed silk saree to ‘Kalyana’ Srinivasa Perumal. Sri Swamiji then gave this ‘vastra’ prasad along with flowers and fruits ‘prasad’ of Perumal to Ammãlu Ammãl. She received the ‘prasad’ with deep reverence. At the behest of Sri Swamiji one of His devotees offered Ammãlu Ammãl’s two personal attendants betel leaves, nut, turmeric, flower and ‘vastra’.
