Whose love changes not even when those who belong to Him sin!

A Story for the Children

<Prev |  Next>

Children! All of you must have heard about Mahãkavi Subramania Bharathiyar. He has sung many patriotic songs for the sake of our country’s freedom. He was greatly involved in the freedom struggle of our country and has also composed many songs expressing concern over the social welfare of our country. Though he did not live for long, the tasks that he undertook for the sake of Tamil was incredible.

Bharathiyar

Once, Bharathiyar visited a village in TamizhNadu as per the wishes of the people in order to attend a festival (Tiruvizha) at the temple of the village deity. A goat was offered as a sacrifice to the deity and it lay slain in front of the deity. A plate containing betel leaves, nuts, and fruits was also placed in front of the deity. Seeing the betel leaves and nuts alone placed in the plate along with the fruits the priest thought, “The pan would be delicious if taken along with lime. But these people have forgotten to place lime along with the betel leaves and nuts. What shall I do now?” As if possessed by the deity, the priest started dancing and shouted angrily, “He has placed betel leaves; He has placed betel nuts; But has forgotten one thing! But has forgotten one thing!”

Hearing this, the people of the village panicked. They cried in anguish, “Oh! We have committed a big mistake which has aroused anger in our deity. We do not understand what the deity needs! Alas! There will be no rain if the deity is not pleased. This will ruin all our lives!” Seeing this, Mahãkavi Bharathiyar boldly stood up and imitating the priest, danced saying, “God has blessed you people with love and discipline but has forgotten to place one thing in your heads!” He meant that, “God has not placed any brains in your head though you are endowed with a good heart”.

Thus children! It is not enough if we are just good and loving. We should be rational for which education is very essential.
