Sri Swamigal     Ucchishtam
Pandari vara Ennai ... (Sri Swamiji's Song)
    The Paduka

Ucchishtam
Leaf - 12

The 'Ucchishtam' of the Guru is His Words/Upadesas!

  • One should constantly repeat the names of God irrespective of any activity that he/she might be involved in. Every moment of our life that is spent without the thought of God is indeed a waste.

  • Equality, simplicity, and purity prevail in the presence of true saints.

Pandari vara Ennai...

Raga: Ataana
Tala: Ãdi

Swamigal's Song:(Tamil)

Pallavi

Pandari vara ennai Pandurangan
Aannaiyittaan aannaiyittaan! (Pandari)

Anupallavi

Pandari naanum killambivitten
Sarva ulagamum marunduvitten
Chandrabhaagaiyil snaanam seiden
Pandari namakku pudidalla ena unnarden (Pandari)

Charanams

The Translation:

Pallavi

Panduranga (the Lord!) ordered
Me to come to Pandari (pura)!

Anupallavi

The whole world forgotten
rushed I to Pandari (pura)! Bathing in Chandrabhaaga
Familiar (not new) felt I of Pandari!

Charanams

Listened I to Naamasankirtan of the Sadhus!
Realised I of Sadguru’s Grace!
Begged I of Bhakti from Panduranga!
“The very Dust of Pandari shall bestow bhakti!” said Panduranga!
know not why! But HE (Panduranga) sent me away from Pandari (Pura)!
But Panduranga remains imprinted in my Heart!

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Unyeshu satsvapi narendrasuteshu daivaad
  Brashtah padaadadhikaroti padam padaarhah |
Praayo nidarshayati tat prathamo raghoonaam
Tatpaadayoh pratinidhii manipaaduke vaa || (824)

The Lord and His Paaduka exemplify a rule of the World. One may, due to God’s Will, lose what is rightfully his but ultimately regains it. This is seen in both Lord Rama’s and His Paaduka’s case. Rama regained the ‘padam’ (seat/position) that was rightfully his. The Paaduka missed Rama’s ‘Padam’ (Feet) but gained the ‘Padam’! (positon - the position of ruling Ayodhya).

Rame Raajyam piturabhimatam sammatam cha prajaanaam
Maataa vavre tadhiha bharate satyavaadii dadau cha |
Chintaatiitah samajani tadaa paadukaagryaabhisheko
   Durvijnaanasvahrudayamaho daivamatra pramaanam || (826)

What we desire may not come to be. Only God’s Will shall prevail. Dasarata desired Rama to rule the Kingdom. The citizens also desired the same. But mother Kaikeyi desired to usurp the throne for her own son Bharata. But, unexpectedly the coronation of the (Rama’s) Paaduka took place! None knows the Will of God. Inscrutable is the way of God that runs all affairs.
