Bhagavãn Sri Krishna’s dialogue with His loving devotee, Uddhava.
(Srimad Bhãgavatam - 11th Skanda)
Uddhava:
“What is ‘balam’ (strength)?”
Sri Krishna:
“Prãnayama is the best ‘balam’!"
Uddhava:
“What is ‘Bãgyam’ (fortune)?”
Sri Krishna:
“To attain my ‘iswarya’ is the best ‘bãgyam’!”
Uddhava:
“What is ‘lãbam’ (profit)?”
Sri Krishna:
“To earn Bhakti for me is the best ‘lãbam’!”
Uddhava:
“What is ‘Vidya’ (learning/education)?”
Sri Krishna:
“That which removes duality (that we are different from the atman)
is ‘vidya’!”
Uddava:
“What is ‘vetkam’ (embarrassment)?”
Sri Krishna:
“Disgust in wicked deeds is ‘vetkam’!”
Uddhava:
“What is ‘Sri’ (‘iswarya’ - wealth)?”
Sri Krishna:
“Atma gunas such as desirelessness in worldly affairs is ‘Sri’!”
Uddhava:
“What is ‘Sukha’ (joy)?”
Sri Krishna:
“It is ‘sukha’ when the mind experiences neither joy nor happiness!”
Uddhava:
“What is ‘Dukha’ (sorrow)?”
Sri Krishna:
“The desire to enjoy pleasures of senses like sensual pleasure is ‘dukha’!”
Uddhava:
“Who is a ‘Pundit’ (Scholar)?”
Sri Krishna:
“One who knows what is ‘banda’ (binding) and what is ‘Moksha’ (liberation)
is a Pundit!” (Not the one who has mere theoretical knowledge, through the
the study of the Shastras that ‘samsãra’ is the binding factor and Moksha is to
get out of it. Only one who realizes this in experience and frees himself is the
one who has truly known ‘banda’ and ‘Moksha’)
