Brahmotsavam 2001

4.30 p.m

Kovai Sri Jayaraman Bhãgavata and party performed Ashtapati Bhajan.

Nikunjotsav - The stage had been literally set for Nikunjotsav.

Premika Varadan with Madhuri Sakhi by His side sat in the new cradle fixed in the huge Mantap on the stage, looking over the huge Bhãgavata Bhavanam filled with devotees assembled to celebrate the ten-day Utsav for Him and His consort!

Brahmotsavam 2001

On this evening of Nikunjotsav, the stage had been decorated with flowers. Strings of white jasmine, yellow sãmanti and orange kanakãmbara hung on both sides of the huge Mantap. ‘Agal villakku’ (small mud lamps) were lit and placed in a long line covering the stage on all three sides and in a single row just in front of the stage, below, on the floor. Huge artistic Kolams decorated the floor right in front of the stage and the center of the Bhãgavata Bhavanam.

“Chal! Chal! Radhe! Vrindavaneshwari! Nikunja Mandiram Chal! Chal!” Where is Vrindavan? Wherever Krishna and Radha are! Here, indeed, was the Nikunja Mandiram of Vrindavan where Premika Varadan-Madhuri Sakhi sat blissfully swinging on the new ‘oonjal’ (swing) specially made for them! They sat proudly, heads held high, as the innumerable devotees went up to them and enjoyed their beauty with wide-open eyes and gaping mouths! It is, indeed, an easy guess wherefrom the jewels borrowed their lustre!

7.30 p.m. - 10.30 p.m.

‘Gãnamrudhavãni’ Smt. Nityashree Mahadevan’s classical musical concert.

Brahmotsavam 2001

“If music could hold the attention of an innocent babe as also a venomous snake, is it surprising then that the Creator (Bhagavãn) should feel enamored by the melody of music? (!)” …………..Sri Swamiji in His discourse on Namasankeertanam.

For full three hours the young but one of the greatest musicians of all times enthralled Pemika Varadan-Madhuri Sakhi, Sri Swamiji and the huge crowd of devotees with the melody of music. The entire Bhãgavata Bhavanam, from Vedic Scholars to little playful children, sat drowned in the melody, as would a bee drunk with the flower's nectar. Waves and waves of soothe, fine texture of a voice, melodiously and majestically singing the Glory of Bhagavãn floated high and low, in and around Mathurãpuri Ashram. It was a smooth dive deep into the ocean of devotion holding within it Mira, Puranadaradasa, Thiagaraja, Gopalakrishna Bhãrati, Sadasiva Brahmendra and Oothukãdu Venkatasubbaiah.

With an apt take off seeking the blessings of the Guru with ‘Guruvarulum, Thiruvarulum enakkarulum Ganapathiye!’ Nityashree went on to render some of the favourites of the Special gathering before switching over to other numbers,

Brahmotsavam 2001

  • ‘Gãna murte’,
  • ‘Pandureeti goluviyyavayya Rama’
  • ‘Bhajare Gopãlam, Mãnasa’
  • ‘Bãlakrishnan Pãdamalar pannivorkku’

  • ‘Idu dãno Thillai sthalam?’
  • ‘Theerada villaiyãtu pillai’
  • ‘Nãn ange varugalãgumo, Iyã?’
  • ‘Bandane ne Ranga bandane’
  • ‘Kondal vannanai Kovalanãi’
  • ‘Kurai onrum illai, Maraimurti Kanna’
  • ‘Eppo varuvãro?’
  • ‘Janani! Janani!’
  • ‘Ãye Giridhar’
  • ‘Sarvam Brahma mayam re! re!’
  • ‘Thillãna’
  • ‘Mangalam’

‘Kurai onrum illai Maraimurti* Kanna! Kurai onrum illai Kanna!
Kurai onrum illai Govinda!
Kannukku theriyãmal nirkinrãi Kanna!
Kannukku theriyãmal ninrãlum enakku
Kurai onrum illai Maraimurti Kanna!’
…………. (Sri Rajaji)

‘Oh! Veiled Krishna! There is absolutely no dearth of anything!
(yes, of course) there is no dearth, Oh! Govinda!
(though)You stand hidden from my vision
(yet) Oh! Veiled Krishna! there is nothing lacking (in my life)!’

* 'Marai’ carries the dual meaning of the Vedas and veil(ed).
