Brahmotsav 2001 - 11th August 2001
“The Jayanti (Birth Day) of Sri Krishna - Janmãshtami/Krishnãshtami - denotes the birth not of the eternal Lord but the birth of Srimad Bhãgavatam!” ………..Sri Swamiji in His discourse on Srimad Bhãgavatam
‘Vasudeva grihe sãkshãt Bhagavãn purushah parah janishyate (Lord Brahma declared, “The Lord Himself is about to incarnate as the son of Devaki. Those of you who wish to enjoy the lilas of the Lord may be born as Gopis [as girls] ) The time was auspicious with the charisma of all the seasons. The star Rohini was in the ascent. Flowers of all seasons were in full bloom eager to witness the extraordinary event. Gentle breeze was blowing carrying along with it the aroma of the flowers. Peace permeated the whole earth. The hearts of all were elated. Even Kamsa’s mind and heart were filled with virtuous thoughts! The heavens were filled with the melody of Dundhubi. Siddhas and Chãranas were busy chanting the praise of the Lord while Gandharvas and Kinaras were singing. The apsaras were dancing. The Devas and Rishis showered flowers on the earth.
IT WAS MIDNIGHT.
‘TAM ADBUDAM BAALAKAM, AMBUJEKSHANAM, CHATURBHUJAM, SHANKHAGADAARYUDAAYUDAM, SRIVATSALAKSHMAM, GALASHOBIKOUSTUBAM!’ (The wonderful child is lotus eyed, four armed holding the Shankha, Chakra, Gada and Padmam). The child was quickly, as per the Lord’s instruction, exchanged for the female infant born in Gokulam to Yashoda, wife of Nandababa. The sleeping Nandababa was woken up with the joyous news of a son having been born to him! The whole Gokulam woke up with the wonderful news and soon the cowherd village wore a festive look! The Gopas and Gopis rushed to Nandababa’s palace to have a look at the Child! The ‘mischievous’ child glanced askance to check if all the Devas had taken their place in Gokulam! The aesthetically dressed Gopis lifted the dark babe from the cradle and He passed from one palm to another as if a game of ‘passing the ball’ was being played! The fair pink tinged palms of the gopis seemed like the lotus holding the ‘bee’ that was the dark Krishna! Sri Sukãchãrya describes that the Gopas played several odd instruments, hitherto unknown! The Gopas had picked up tins and several household articles and beat them with a stick - ‘Dum! Dum! Dum! Dum! Dum! Dum! Dum! Dum!’ This competed with the tinkling sound of the Gopis’ bangles and anklets. Turmeric water, butter mixed with castor oil (to make a permanent mark on the clothes in memory of the Great Day) were splashed against each other drowning the whole Gokulam in a blissful mood! 11th August, 2001 Morning - Premika Bhavanam The Ten-day Utsav commenced on the auspicious day of Janmãshtami with Thirumanjanam for Srinivasa Perumal by Sri Swamiji, in Premika Bhavanam.
