Ucchishtam
Leaf - 13
The 'Ucchishtam' of the Guru
is His Words/Upadesas!
Sri Swamiji -
One who leads a simple life and has a family that is conducive to his devotion towards God,
in my opinion, would not consider Heaven or even Vaikunta greater than that.
We are prepared to spend years together in this world for studies which help us earn our
livelihood thereby providing us with a life of comfort and luxury. But when it comes to spiritual
life, we have the least patience and we expect results as soon as we start practicing
the discipline.

The Translation:
Oh ! The one who is clad in yellow silk !
The one who likes Vrindãvana (forest of Tulasi plants )!
The one who is very affectionate towards his devotees !
May you (wake up and ) be cheerful !
The one who is worshipped by even Gods like Brahma !
The one who protected the sage Brigu !
The one who is the beloved of Bhargavi (Goddess Sri) !
May you (wake up and ) be cheerful !
Oh ! The beloved of Sita !
The one with lotus-like eyes !
The protector of the entire world !
May you (wake up and ) be cheerful !
The one who won over Kara and Dooshana !
The one whose speech is very sweet and pleasing !
The one with Kodanda (bow) in his hands !
May you (wake up and ) be cheerful !
Oh ! The lover of Tulasi forest !
The one who protected Draupadi !
The one worsipped by young prince Dhruva !
May you (wake up and ) be cheerful !
The one who steals curd and butter !
The one who adorns a colorful garland made of flowers from the forest !
The one who is compassionate even to the lowly!
May you (wake up and ) be cheerful !
Oh ! The son of Yashoda !
The jewel of Yadu clan !
The one who sports in the waters of Yamuna !
May you (wake up and ) be cheerful !
The one who relieved a Yaksha of his curse !
The one worshipped by all Devas !
The protector of Parikshit !
May you (wake up and ) be cheerful !
Oh ! The one who loves the Bhãgavatas (his devotees ) !
The one who mitigates the sorrow of samsara !
The one reposing on a serpent !
May you (wake up and ) be cheerful !
The beloved Lord of young Muralidhara !
Premika Varada - The one who fulfills the desires of his loving devotees!
May you (wake up and ) be cheerful !

The Paduka
Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from
mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable
'Granthas' (texts) written by Him
the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His
"Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha.
The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing
in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!
Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a
commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Oh! Pãduka!
Ignoring You, the greatest treasure
My mind involves in lowly ways of
Artha, kãma, etc.!
The omnipotent Bhagavãn, too,
Is apathetic towards me
Due to my faults
Which,
In itself makes me the right recipient
For His Grace!
Why then do You
Oh! Pãduka!
Take HIM to someone else?
It is You, who
Should turn HIM, the Lord
Towards me!

Oh! Pãduka!
Only the Nityasooris and the virtuous
Deserve to worship the Lord
Who comes on procession
Along with Sridevi and Bhooma Devi
Led on by You, on the banks of the Cauvery!
May Your Grace
Enable me to envision this!
