“Even Mercy Has Got Some Force”

A great devotee had to confront many troubles at a certain point
of time in his life. He narrated his problems to his friend and
asked him to suggest a solution. His friend informed him about an
astrologer who was an expert in the field and suggested that
he take his horoscope to the astrologer who would provide a
remedy after analyzing the position of the planets.
Heeding to the words of his friend, the devotee visited the
astrologer. The astrologer, after analyzing the horoscope,
asked him to come the next day to know about the result. While returning home
the devotee was caught in a torrential rain and was forced to take
shelter in a dilapidated Perumal temple for about half an hour.
Seeing the decrepit state of the temple, the devotee was filled
with anguish. He thought that if god blessed him with riches,
he would renovate the temple. As this thought passed through
his mind, he imagined as to how he would go about the renovation.
Thus he mentally performed the ‘Samprokshanam’ of the temple.
By then the rain had also ceased and the devotee started towards his home.
Next day, the devotee, returned to the astrologer. The astrologer was astounded to see the devotee. He addressed the devotee thus- “My predictions have never gone wrong till date.
According to your horoscope, you must have expired last night.
I was hesitant to inform this to you
and that was the reason that I had asked you to come today.
Moreover, the only way you could have escaped death was through the performance of
‘Samprokshanam’ of a Perumal temple! As I knew that you neither had the money nor the time for this, I thought it best not to inform you about it.”
The devotee then explained to the astrologer the events of the previous night. The astrologer told the devotee that the anguish felt by him on seeing the condition of the temple and the performance of the ‘Samprokshanam’ of the temple mentally, had earned him the required merit (Punya) to escape the jaws of death.
So we should always entertain healthy thoughts in our mind. When we see some one in trouble or afflicted by some disease, we must sympathize with them. Though we might not be able to help them monetarily or physically, even sympathy can do good to them.
