Ucchishtam
Leaf - 8

The 'Ucchishtam' of the Guru is His Words/Upadesas!

Sri Swamigal -

  • A person who works for a wealthy man is relaxed with the thought that the employer would take care of all his needs, be it his daughter’s marriage or son’s education. He enjoys a sense of security in the mere thought, “My master will take care of me!” But, pity indeed it is that we who have come to the omnipotent Sri Vasudeva do not hold on to Him and lead a carefree life!

  • Once a person complained to me, “In my office all my colleagues are totally uncooperative”. I told him, “Be affectionate to all. This will surely bring about a drastic change.” After some time he came to me and said, “As per your advice I was affectionate towards all my colleagues. Yet none of them cooperates. All of them are mere cheats!” I then pointed to him, “I advised you to be affectionate to your colleagues and not just pose to be affectionate. This is the reason for your failure.”

The Translation:

Pallavi

Drink! I will
  the nectar of Bhakti, and
  enlighten (you) on Bhãgavatam!

Charanams

Drink! I will,
the grace of the Guru, and
   enlighten (you) on Guru’s glory!

Drink! I will,
   the nectar of ‘Love’, and
enlighten (you) on the power of ‘Love’!

Drink! I will,
   the blessings of Sadhu, and
enlighten (you) on the ‘Gunas’ of Sadhu!

Drink I will,
the melody of the ‘divine’ flute, and
enlighten (you) on the ‘form’ of the Lord!

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Shirasi vinihitãyãm bhaktinamre bhavatyãm
  Sapadi tanubhrutastãmunnatim prãpnuvanti |
Madhuripupadarakshe yadvashenaiva teshãm
Anitarasulabham tadh dhãma hastãpacheyam || (53)

Oh! Pãduka of the Lord!
Though the Bhaktas who wear You on their heads appear
to be small with their heads bent,
the abode of the Lord, not easily accessible for others,
  comes within their hand’s reach!

Kripãvisheshãt shamayã sametam
  Pravartamãnãm jagato vibhootyai |
Avaimi nityam Manipãduke! Tvãm
  Ãkasmikeem Rangapateh prasatim! || (278)

Oh! Manipãduka!
  You, who wander about
for the benefit of the world
  are,
but - the concrete form of Grace
  gushing even voluntarily
  from the Lord!

Asuryabhedhyãm rajaneem prajãnãm
  Ãlokamãtrenna nivãrayanti |
Ãmoghavritir Manipãdarakshe!
Muradvisho moortimatii dayã tvam! || (484)

Oh! Manipãduka!
  Your lustre eradicates
  the darkness of samsãra
  Even
The Sun (light) fails to destroy
  thus,
  You are verily
  the incarnation of the Lord’s
  Dayã Guna!
