Sri Swamigal     Ucchishtam
    Namãmi Sadgurudevam...(Sri Swamigal's Song)
    The Paduka

Ucchishtam
Leaf - 6

The 'Ucchishtam' of the Guru is His Words/Upadesas!

Sri Swamigal -

One may find a lot of people chanting the Vedas, 'Pãsurangals' and singing devotional songs, without proper knowledge or devotional fervour. This dry way of chanting can be excused for the mere reason that these could thus be preserved for a great devotee who may be born in future to enjoy these.

Though the fact is that it is only our devotion (love) to God that comes back to us as 'GRACE', the RETURN is immeasurably higher than our devotion; just as the light that falls on the mirror is reflected manifold.

As far as possible our sadhana and bhakti should be kept concealed, for, others' praise and honour shown to us are but blocks in our sadhana.

Namãmi Sadgurudevam...

Raga: Vasantha
Tala: Ãdi

Swamigal's Song:

Pallavi

Namãmi Sadgurudevam
namãmi sadgurudevam     (Namãmi)

Charanam

Naralokabandum nãrãyanam
Lilayã druta mãnushavesham   (Namãmi)

Bhaktachitãkarshana sundaravadanam
Bhaktacharitra kutoohalena varshitam
Patitajana udhãrana dheeram
Paramakripãnidhim Muralidharasevitam     (Namãmi)

The Translation:

Pallavi

Prostrations unto the Gurudeva!
Prostrations unto the Gurudeva!    (Prostrations)

Charanam

Who
Is the only kith and kin of mankind
Wears the garb of a man in His lila    (Prostrations)

Who
Magnetizes the devotees' heart with His beautiful countenance
Pours forth passionately the life histories of great bhaktas
Is the valiant saviour of the humble
Is the greatest treasure house of compassion and is worshipped by Muralidhara!    (Prostrations)

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganathar. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Saha prãyata satatam prayãnne prãptãsane sansritapãdapeetã |
alanganeeyã sahajena bhoomnã chhayeva shiiraimannipãduke! Tvam || (280)

Oh! Manipãduka!
When the Lord goes on His wanderings You, too, go along with Him
When the Lord is seated, You stay in the Pãdapeeta
Even if You seem to be bound thus, the glory of the Lord does not transcend Yours (Your own glory)
You are like His shadow! Can one cross over the shadow?
You are inseparable from the Lord
HE cannot transcend the glory of One who is like His shadow.

Padasprushã Rangapatirbhavatyã vichakrame viswamidam shapena |
tadasya manye mannipãdarakshe! Tvayaiva virakyãtamurukramatvam || (281)

Oh! Manipãduka!
it was only because of Your Presence on His Lotus Feet
that the Lord measured the Universe in a moment!
the Name 'Urukrama' has been Your gift to Him!
