Ucchishtam
Leaf - 9
The 'Ucchishtam' of the Guru
is His Words/Upadesas!
Sri Swamigal -
A child jumps about in joy when clothed in silk attire and bedecked with jewels though it places no value to these. Similarly a Jnãni is happy with the services we render him.He is in no way interested in them but enjoys them only as it makes us happy.
Out of sheer compassion a Mahan who is in out-of-the-world state comes down to this physical plane and speaks to us. While this in itself is due to compassion one cannot expect any other kindness from him. Neither can He understand our (low) state nor can we comprehend his (high) state.
In various ways does the world criticise a Mahan who does not bless worldly prayers. Man should understand that the Mahan is under no obligation to use the Tapas that he has earned through great sacrifice, control of the mind and victory over his senses
for our sake yet if he does it is only out of 'deep compassion'.

The Paduka
Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from
mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable
'Granthas' (texts) written by Him
the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His
"Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha.
The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing
in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!
Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a
commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Oh! Manipãduka!
An amazing togetherness
Is Your conjunction with the Lotus Feet of the Lord!
And
A blissful sight, too !
The fast observed by humans eyes
Deprived of such blissful sight, have
Broken their fast!
And what a termination of fast (‘Pãranai’)
With the delicious a feed as Milk with sugar!

Oh! Pãduka!
You their only God!
Paramaikãntis seek no reward but You!
Hearts purified through
Observance of the thirteen-fold behaviour
Render service to You who are
In union with the Lord’s Lotus Feet!
