YOUR NEXT DATE (SWATHI) is on 30th JUNE, 2001!

Sri Swamigal
'The Guru and the Devotee (a Calf)'
    Ucchishtam
    The Paduka

Ucchishtam
Leaf - 10

The 'Ucchishtam' of the Guru is His Words/Upadesas!

Sri Swamigal in his discourse -

  • “The love of a Sadguru is crores of times greater than that of the mother. When the child is ill what does/can the mother do? Sit day and night with the child worrying over him/her and pray to God to protect the child. But what does the Sadguru do? PROTECT the child!”

  • "In her love for the child what does the mother do? Advises him, “Eat well, sleep well, study well and earn well!” - ‘udalai perukki, ullolli churukki’ (Tamizh) - She fattens up the child’s physique and ego thus hampering his spiritual growth. And what does the Sadguru do? - ‘udalai churukki ullolli perukki’- Destroys his ego and helps his spiritual growth (that is the very purpose of life)."

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

Oh! Manipãduka!
You make His walk enjoyable for the Lord!
An ocean of charm does He become
    In His gait!
    And,
    To that ocean
Verily the sea moss (the cleanser)
Is the sparkle from your emeralds!

Oh! Manipaaduka!

Oh! Manipaaduka!
The Lord wears You for a particular walk!
    And
You offer Yourself at the Lord’s Feet
Your Bhakti is also set firm
    Even as
The gem-setting pattern is aptly designed to suit the Foot shape
Further, with the green aura of your emeralds thrown around
You seem to nurture a Tulasi garden!
