The 'Ucchishtam' of the Guru
is His Words/Upadesas!
Sri Swamiji -
The rose shuns the pink(rose) colour from amongst all the colours of the light. It absorbs the other colours within it. But, it is this pink colour shunned by the flower that brings fame and glory to it. Likewise, when a man truly shuns a thing, it will come seeking him.
Man and animal are similar in many aspects. Feelings of hunger, sleep, sexual desire, joy and sorrow are common to
both. But the animal does not possess man’s intellect. The animal cannot turn its vision inward and see the Ãtman.
If a man fails to use his intellect for the attainment of God, he is no different from the animal!

The Translation:
Pallavi
Salutations to you oh! Vamshidhara! (The one holding a flute)
The son of Nanda!
Charanams
Oh! The paramour of Gopis!
One who plays with the Gopis!
One wearing a garland made of flowers from the forest!
One who loves to live in Vrindãvan! (Salutations to you oh! Vamshidhara! )
One who surpasses even cupid in his beauty!
One who is sweeter than the sweetest!
One with a propitious eye!
One who speaks sweetly! (Salutations to you oh! Vamshidhara! )
One with a beautiful form!
One possessed of all virtues!
One with a nose like that of champaka flowers!
One with lotus feet! (Salutations to you oh! Vamshidhara! )
Oh! The son of a Gopa(Nanda)
One who resides in Gokula!
One who lifted the mighty Govardhana Mountain!
One who holds the flute gently in his hands! (Salutations to you oh! Vamshidhara! )

The Paduka
Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from
mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable
'Granthas' (texts) written by Him
the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His
"Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganatha.
The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing
in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!
Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a
commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.
Mahiikshitãm Raghava Pãdarakshe!
Bhadrãsanasthãm bhavatiim sprushantah |
Poorvam tathãtve niyateapi bhooyah
Kalyãnatãmãnashire kiriitãh || (171)

Oh! Pãdukãs of Raghava!
the crowns of those kings
who
prostrated before You
turned auspicious
by virtue of contact (with You)
though,
they were golden
before they touched You.
(Here, there is a pun in the word ‘kalyãnathãm’ - It means ‘golden’ and ‘auspiciousness’. Even though a person is of great merit he becomes really meritorious only after attaining a Guru)
Anicchatah pãndaram ãtapatram
Pitrã vitiirnam Manipãdarakshe! |
Ãsiit tvadartam vidrutena tena
Chhãyã samagrã bharatasya moulou || (172)

Bharata shunned
the Royal umbrella!
Offered by his father
and
held it over You!
But,
Its shadow and beauty
undesired
remains bestowed on
Bharata himself!
(Here there is a pun on the word ‘Chhãya’. It means both ‘shadow’ and ‘beauty’. The white umbrella (Royal insignia) has bestowed its shadow on Bharata’s crown thereby lending its beauty)
