Sri Swamigal     Ucchishtam
    Srimad Bhãgavatam ....(Sri Swamigal's Song)
    The Paduka

Ucchishtam
Leaf - 7

The 'Ucchishtam' of the Guru is His Words/Upadesas!

Sri Swamigal -

  • An atheist who refuses the existence of God or Vaikunta when asked “Do you exist?” replies stormily, “I do!” But the poor fellow knows not that it is this “I” that is God!

  • Just as a snake is waiting to swallow the frog, Yama (the Lord of death) is waiting to carry out his duty. We know not when we will meet with death. And when death occurs, none - wealth, titles, power, fame, family, relatives, friends - can help. Even though we are aware that the Lord’s Lotus Feet is the only way out we are unable to shirk all these. The Lord’s Maya is so strong!

  • While deeply meditating on God we should pray for forgiveness for all the sins committed due to vãsanãs. Further, we should seek His help for abstaining from these. Such sincere prayers will surely be answered.

The Paduka

Sri Swamigal's Paduka

Sriman Nigamantha Desikan, a great Vaishnava Saint lived from mid-thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century- 1268-1369. Of the innumerable 'Granthas' (texts) written by Him the highly revered and considered as the most extraordinary piece is His "Paduka Sahasram" - a thousand verses on the 'Paduka' of Lord Ranganathar. The Saint has in all composed 1008 verses, the last eight apologizing in all humility for daring to compose these 1000 verses on the Paduka!

Sri Desikan's contemporary Sri Appayya Dikshitar had written a commentary on the "Paduka Sahasram" but unfortunately it has been lost.

The moment I place the Pãduka, worshipped by Bharata, on my head I achieve all possible aspirations that is cherished by the poets of this vast land, from the Himalayas to the Setu (Rameswaram). (i.e. Guru's grace awards all powers)

Oh! Lord's Pãduka!
One who bears you on his head but once shuns even the heaven as mere hell and having attained a status similar to that of the Upanishads because of contact with You, enter Vaikunta to join the assemblage of previous Muktas, i.e. their Masters.
