1.Mãta shatruh Pita vairii yena bãlo na pãttitah |
na shobhate sabhamadhye hamsamadhye bako yathã ||

The mother and the father are enemies to the child that has not been provided with proper education and taught healthy habits. This child is likened to the crane that earns no respect amidst a group of swans, for, he is without any self-esteem amidst the Learned.

2. Mãtruvatparadãreshu paradravyeshu loshtavat |
Ãtmavat sarvabhuteshu yah pashyati sa panditah ||

Pandit is he who looks upon another’s wife as his own mother, another’s wealth as mere dust and all lives as his own!

3.Yauvanam dhanasampanti prabhutvam-avivekta |
Ekaikamapyanarthãya kimu yatra chatushtayam ||

Youthfulness, wealth, Lordship, ignorance,
What to speak of one Who possesses all these?
When even one of these invites trouble!
