17. Kurarai

I learnt the lesson that man suffers untold misery due to his fondness for any object in possession. He enjoys peace and happiness when he gives it up. This I learnt from the bird ‘kurari’. It held a piece of meat in its beak. The other bigger birds pecked at it. The ‘Kurari’ still held on to the meat piece suffering the harassment by the other birds. But unable to bear it any further it left its hold on the meat and immediately the other birds stopped harassing it. The carefree ‘Kurari’ went on its way. I am happy because neither praise nor abuse affects me. I have no family to demand my affection. I am not bound by any earthly bondage and hence am happy and peaceful.

18. Young girl

A young girl who was left alone at home had to attend to unexpected guests. She went to the backyard of the house to pound some grains. The bangles worn in her hand made noise. So, she wore just two on each hand breaking the rest of them. But even these made noise. So, she broke one on each hand and the remaining one did not make any noise. She could now work quietly. The priceless lesson that I learnt from this young girl was that living amongst many people caused quarrels and discontent. Even two people were enough to cause disharmony. So, like the bangle on the girl’s hand one should be alone in the world.

19. Archer

An archer while aiming at the target was not aware of what was happening around him. He did not even notice a King pass by. The target held his total concentration and the only thought in him was to hit it. Concentration is absolutely essential for a man who desires to attain one-ness with the Paramãtama. This comes only by practice. The restless mind jumps from one object to another ceaselessly. But the controlled mind gives up desires on it own accord and is free from ‘vãsanas’.
