I am childless. Innumerable treatments and penances have all proved useless. What kinds of sins do our Shastras list/point out to in the matter of one remaining childless?

Our Shastras specify that one who had committed the following sins in his/her previous 'janmas' (births) shall not beget a child:

  • had aborted the foetus in the womb through medicine or poison,

  • had murdered a child at his own will or on the advice of someone else

  • had abandoned his wife

  • had taken away the entire milk of the cow depriving the calf of its share

  • had hacked down the peepul tree

  • had killed a snake living in its hole and taken away the gem.

Though I decide to do 'japa' everyday, for a certain number of times, I am unable to meet the vow taken. What am I to do?

Normally, it is only the strong-willed who can fulfill the vow made. Always vow to do the 'japa' much higher - double or thrice - than the actual number that you aspire. Only then will you be able to meet atleast a little of it! For example, all those who toiled for our Nation's independence did so with a single-minded effort. But once it had been attained we were at a loss to know what was to be done next. However, had the effort been towards the attainment of 'Rama Rajya' we would not have reached the goal till date and would have continued to work for it. Therefore, we should always keep our motive (goal) beyond reach!

What is 'Rama Rajya?'

The Nation in which all the citizens sing the praise of the Lord and surrender all their actions to the Lord is known as 'Rama Rajya'.

How is one to practise sakyam, paada sevanam (service of the Lotus Feet), atma nivedanam (complete surrender) which are the last mentioned 'sadanas' in 'nava vida' (nine steps of) Bhakti?

In 'Ashtangayoga' (eight steps of yoga) yama, niyama, aasanam, praanayaamam pertain to the body. Prathyaharam, dharanai, dhyanam and samadhi pertain to the mind. Similarly, in 'nava vida' Bhakti sakyam, paada sevanam, atma nivedanam can be attained only by the highest order of spiritual aspirants.

Why should we chant the Lord's name repeatedly if it is true that the utterance of His Name just once shall burn up the sins?

Some chant the Lord's Name for extricating their sins. Some do it for the sheer joy experienced in the mere chanting. There is absolutely no doubt that chanting of the Lord's Name shall remove sins. However high the quality of the seeds be, its growth depends on the quality of the soil it has been sown in. Likewise, the geatness of the Naama is unique indeed but the result depends on the maturity of the one who chants it. Yet, the truth is that one who chants Bhagavan Naama (the Name of the Lord) does not do so in vain.

Having received 'upadesa' from a SathGuru a friend of mine was practicing the 'sadanas'. However, he has now stopped practicing the 'sadanas'. All advices to him to take up the 'sadanas' fall on deaf ears. What is to be done?

You need not worry on this account! The 'upadesa' of a real Guru does not go in vain. At the appropriate time it will work, inducing him to take up the sadanas once more.
