Question:

A few months back "THE HINDU", the English Daily, carried an article that said that all those who were in sorrow were shudras and all those who were in joy brahmanas. The article further declared that as all the people of India were in sorrow they were all shudras. What is your answer for this?

Swamigal:

In the world all those who are steeped in ignorance are in sorrow. Hence, they are all shudras. Likewise, those who are full of knowledge are those in joy. Hence they are brahmanas. So it shows that those who have attained knowledge are brahmanas and the rest shudras.

Question:

Recently an Indian flight was hijacked and the passengers suffered untold miseries. In spite of innumerable sages and yogins in our country why weren't they saved?

Swamigal:

From your question it appears as if in India there has been just this one suffering. People in different parts of our country are everyday undergoing untold miseries in the hands of the terrorists. In the recent monsoon there was vast destruction in Orissa. Everyday innumerable murders, robberies are taking place. Everyday people are dying of diseases, accidents and starvation. Don't these also occur in our country where there are innumerable sages and yogins? The reason for these is only man's avarice, ego and covetousness.

Question:

I always like to keep on listening to Bhagavata when rendered by someone, but I am unable to do japa or meditation. What am I to do?

Swamigal:

It is enough if one can keep listening to Bhagavata. Did not Parikshit attain liberation just by listening to Bhagavata told by Sukar? Parikshit did not do any meditation. Similarly, brahmarakshas DunduKari got liberated just by listening to the Bhagavata. Hence, sincere listening will suffice

Question:

Yesterday in his lecture a person said that Veda was God and spoke very well about the need to protect the Vedas.

Swamigal:

Today, there are ever so many who speak vehemently on public platforms that Veda is God and the need to protect It as It is everything. It has become a fashion to do so. Majority of these speakers do not send their sons to study the Vedas. Nor do they offer their daughters in marriage to one who has studied the Vedas. Of what use is there then to just speak of the greatness of the Vedas.
